CHILDREN receiving treatment for cancer were moved to the adult hospital for their own safety last year after a number developed infections linked to contaminated water in the children’s hospital. The problem first emerged in March.

The board is now carrying out a £1.25million upgrade of the water and ventilation system with paediatric patients continuing to be treated in the adult hospital.

The fact that a child, thought to have been suffering from cancer, died after contracting another bug linked to pigeon droppings in the adult hospital, supposedly a safer environment for them, is deeply worrying.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde has said that special HEPA air filters are being installed in rooms that require them and the Health Secretary Jeane Freeman said she was confident that NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde had taken all the necessary steps to protect patients.

However, questions will be asked why those filters were not in place to protect the most vulnerable patients, including
