HUNDREDS more women have filed equal pay claims after the council agreed a settlement worth £500m.

The deadline for submitting claims to be included in the pay-out expected sometime in the next financial year has now passed.

Potential claimants had until last week to register with either their union or lawyers who have a deadline this week for putting the claim to the council.

Lawyers said they have received an extra 750 claims on top of the 14,500 that were already being dealt with in the negotiations.

Women can still claim but can only claim for five years backdated pay whereas those who filed earlier will be eligible for 12 years.

Some women are expected to get a pay out of more than £100,000.

Stefa Cross QC of Action for Equality said : “ women had until last week to submit new claims. Anyone submitting after that wont be included in this round of the settlement.”

The GMB union also said that they agree no new forms would be sent out after last week and they will be submitting new claims received before then this week.

The high number of new claims, despite years of publicity surrounding equal pay means there is likely to be some women who have not made a claim who could be eligible.

Glasgow City Council agreed with representatives for the 14,500 women a deal to settle the equal pay claims.

It is expected that the payments will be budgeted for in the next financial year from April onwards.

There will be second claims to be considered for those still employed by the council until the new pay and grading system takes effect in 2021.
