POLLOKSHIELDS residents plagued by fireworks issues have cautiously welcomed a Scottish Government consultation into tightening controls.

The community was last year plagued by anti-social behaviour, which saw rockets fired at police and a young child seriously injured.

A consultation launched yesterday, which closed on May 13, focusses on what steps can be taken to address concerns about the misuse of fireworks and the impact on public safety.

Danny Phillips, a Pollokshields resident, said: "While we welcome this consultation, we expect action this year to restrict the sale of fireworks, to restrict their use and we want enough police on our streets so they can enforce the laws we have.

"Communities like Pollokshields have been calling for the police and our Governments to tackle firework problems for over 10 years."

Following the disturbance suffered on Bonfire Night, residents held a public meeting with Nicola Sturgeon, Police Scotland, the fire service and council officials to look at steps forward.

Legislation on the sale and storage of fireworks is reserved to the UK Government, while laws covering their use is devolved.

Community Safety Minister Ash Denham said responses will inform discussions about whether any changes to the legislation and regulation of fireworks in Scotland are needed.
