THE inspirational people leading the way behind a surge in sport have been honoured.
Glasgow’s Sports Person of the Year award winners were announced at a special ceremony in Glasgow City Chambers.
From primary children to professionals, the range of winners show the best of what the city has to offer.
Councillor David McDonald, Depute Leader of Glasgow City Council and chairman of Glasgow Life, said: “Last year was a remarkable year in Glasgow’s proud sporting history, both at a local and an international level - and Friday night’s Sports Person of the Year Awards reflected just that.
“We recognised sport involvement and achievement at every level - from grassroots to the greatest sporting performances of the year.”
We first put the call out for nominations last year with Glasgow Life saying hundreds of entries flooded in.
University students are included in the list of winners, as are school pupils, coaches, volunteers, individual sports people and teams.
It is an impressive list that shows just what Glasgow has to offer.
Mr McDonald added: “In 2018 we hosted some incredible events including the inaugural European Championships.
“But it’s not just about the high profile events - in the last year Glasgow has used sport to transform itself.
“For the sixth year in a row, Glasgow Club attendances over the city have topped six million, and membership is now above 45,000.
“More and more people are becoming inspired by sport and making the most of the opportunities our city has to offer for those who want to become fitter and healthier.
“From our volunteers, schools and coaches who picked up awards tonight, these awards were a brilliant celebration of the best sporting talent in the country, and gave us the opportunity to recognise the incredible efforts made by athletes across the country.”
