Glasgow taxi drivers turned heroes for Strictly Come Dancing Stars who had lost a mobile phone in the city.

Graziano Di Prima's phone had been stolen in a restaurant before a show at the SSE Hydro in the city.

Along with fellow dancers Aljaž Skorjanec and Johannes Radebe, they set out to find the thief with the help of two cabbies.

The drama took place at around 4pm on Friday before the first of the Strictly shows at the Hydro.

Greg Macfarlane, 61, picked up the trio at the Blythswood Hotel in the city centre who were tracking the mobile on an app.

At the same time, Greg's fellow driver Willie Patterson, 59, had dropped the culprit in Dennistoun.

Willie, a driver for Glasgow Taxis, had picked up the thief at Glasgow Cross but felt uneasy because of his behaviour.

He told the Daily Record: "I was sitting waiting for a dispatch when this person turned up asking to be taken to Cumbernauld for £50, saying he had loads of money.

“I said I wasn’t interested but he persuaded me he needed to be taken to the Gallowgate first to see some friends.

“When we arrived, he went up and spoke to a few guys in the close. We got into a bit of an argument over the fare and I asked him to leave.”

After meeting Greg a few streets away, Willie was asked whether he had dropped anyone off.

He then led Greg and the three dancers to the spot where he had dropped the thief off.

The three dancers then tracked the culprit to a nearby booze shop where they rang Graziano’s phone, before it rang in the thief's pocket.

The phone was then handed back without a struggle after the men confronted the thief.

Greg, from East Kilbride, told the Daily Record: “The Strictly guys got out but I could tell they were worried.

"Me and Willie approached the man and told Graziano to call the phone, which he did and it went off.

“We politely asked the man to give us the phone back, which he did.

“I got a really nice text from Graziano afterwards, thanking us.

“I don’t watch the show so it wasn’t until I showed people the picture that I realised they were so famous.”

Stephen Flynn, Chairman of Glasgow Taxis Ltd, said: “This is what we do.

"While this story in itself is a complete one-off, these types of acts of kindness and going the extra mile do take place on a more regular basis than many would realise – we are much more than A to B, we are the city’s friend.

"I’d like to sincerely thank both drivers for helping turnaround the experience of Graziano and his Strictly friends and using all their Knowledge to ensure this particular story had a happy ending."
