A West End music shop has been closed down after its owners went into administration.

Fopp on Byres Road is one of 27 stores to get the axe after music retailer HMV went into administration.

Outlets in Braehead Shopping Centre and Ayr will also be closing.

HMV in Dundee, Aberdeen, East Kilbride, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness, Livingston and Stirling remain open.

Canadian firm Sunrise Records bought the collapsed music chain.

The firm will buy 100 stores across the UK out of administration, securing 1,487 jobs.

Local residents were quick to voice their frustration at the closure.

Patrick Grady MP for Glasgow North said: "Very sorry to see Fopp Byres Road fall victim to HMV closures and restructuring - it was an iconic presence in the West End and this is a loss to the cultural scene as well as impact on jobs and economy."

Malcolm Jack added: "That didn't take long did it? RIP. Another kick in the teeth for the music business and for Byres Road. About half the street is boarded up now."

Fellow customer Richie Bradley commented: "Real shame. I loved this shop, just this week bought 3 CDs but no-one actually buys music anymore, rather they stream bad quality to cheap speakers.Bring back real quality hi-fi. Real shame."

Mr Putman, 34, bought Sunrise Records in 2014 when it had just five stores.

He has since overseen its expansion to 84 sites following the purchase of 70 HMV stores after the Canadian arm went bust in 2017.

He said: "We are delighted to acquire the most iconic music and entertainment business in the UK and add nearly 1,500 employees to our growing team.

"By catering to music and entertainment lovers, we are incredibly excited about the opportunity to engage customers with a diverse range of physical format content and replicate our success in Canada.

"We know the physical media business is here to stay and we greatly appreciate all the support from the suppliers, landlords, employees and, most importantly, our customers."
