Locals have taken to a Bearsden community social media page to express their shock.

One resident said: "My friend messaged me and said it was held up at gunpoint.

"As far as he knew no one was hurt. Absolutely horrific for the staff and anyone who was shopping."

Another added: "Just to say Scotmid closed off just now. Not sure what has happened but it's been taped off with police vans at the location. Just hope all staff and anyone else not injured harmed."
