A Glasgow couple had a Valentine's Day to remember after winning an extra special competition.

Geraldine Mitchell planned a romantic surprise marriage proposal for her partner, Michael Anthony, in the Champagne Corner of the Grand Central Hotel.

The 44-year-old roped in her colleague to dress up as Elvis - one of Michael’s favourite entertainers- and serenade them before she got down on one-knee.

But as the final verse of Can't Help Falling in Love rang in their ears, the night took a dramatic turn.

Much to the surprise of couples in the bar, Michael told Geraldine "I can't" when asked if he would marry her.

Instead, the professional wedding singer pulled out a ring of his own and got down on one knee, uttering the words "I was supposed to ask you to marry me".

The Glasgow School of Art staff member and her eight-year-old son Cameron were shocked into silence by the impromptu proposal.

Glasgow Times:

The happy couple told the Evening Times they had met at a wedding where she was a guest of the bride and Michael was the wedding singer two years earlier. After a beautiful rendition of Take That’s ‘Shine’ that tugged on Geraldine’s heart strings, she was hooked; the rest was history.

After their initial meeting, the couple had their first date in the Grand Central Hotel.

Michael said he had been carrying the ring around for "a while", waiting for the right moment to pop the question.

The hotel announced its search for loved up other halves looking to propose to their significant other on Valentine’s Day back in January and the competition was met with an overwhelming response.

Paul Bray, General Manager of the Grand Central Hotel, said: “We are thrilled to have found our winners of our Month of Love competition. Over the decades, The Grand Central Hotel has become a longstanding favourite when it comes to proposals and marriages and the team here are so happy that Geraldine and Michael are now part of the hotel’s long and romantic history – we wish them a long and happy marriage!”

The lucky couple won an overnight stay at the hotel and enjoyed a free bottle of champagne, and a complimentary three-course meal with a bottle of house wine in the hotel’s Tempus restaurant.

Couples waiting to celebrate Valentine’s Day this weekend can grab a drink at the Grand Central Hotel and choose a treat from the ‘Love Potions’ cocktail menu.
