A SHAWLANDS restaurant can now serve booze until midnight despite concerns the alcohol death rate in the area is higher than the Scottish average.

The Boyd Roderick on Pollokshaws Road, which underwent a £300,000 renovation, has been granted the licence even though it is within an area where the alcohol death rate is at least 125 percent more than the rest of the country.

Children will be allowed inside the premises until 9pm and young people until 11pm, provided they are accompanied by an adult and are having a meal.

The proposals were discussed by Glasgow City Council’s licensing board on Friday.

Elaina Smith, of Glasgow health and social care, said: “In this area alcohol related harm is higher than the Scottish average.

“Even though the rate of alcohol related death rate has gone down they are both still at least 125 percent above the Scottish average.

“We think that children should have restricted access and if these terms are met I am happy.”

Ms Smith was informed by councillor Matt Kerr that children would only be granted access until 9pm and young people 11pm.

A representative from Punch Partnerships Limited said: “Around £300,000 has been spent making this a family business.

“My client has operated a licence for 12 years and is used to making sure operations are carried out safely.

Food is on offer all day and a children’s menu is available.

“My client wants to be able to operate a family friendly environment and allow families to come together.

“Children would not be allowed in after 9pm and young people would have to leave by 11pm.

“Some people may choose to come in for a meal and then stay later once the children have been taken home.”
