WANT to take a peek behind the building site hoardings at Queen Street Station and find out what’s going on?

Rail bosses are organising behind the scenes tours of the construction site as workers build the new-look station.

Over three days next month, groups of 20 people will get the unusual opportunity to go onto the live construction site as the station is expanded outwards towards George Square to accommodate longer platforms to take eight carriage trains as a new glass frontage is created.

Tours will take one hour with a guide form the construction team.

Tommy McPake, Network Rail programme manager, said: “Glasgow Queen Street is undergoing a significant transformation and we are pleased that we can offer members of the public a unique behind-the-scenes insight into the work that is going on.

“The last major redevelopment of the station was nearly 50 years ago and we don’t often have the chance to open up our worksites to the public so this is a rare opportunity to experience a piece of railway and Glasgow history in the making.”

Tours will take place between March 21 to 23 and participants must be 16 years or over.

Barry Nicol, Balfour Beatty senior project manager, said: “We have reached a key stage in our construction programme so there is lots to see as we install the steelwork that will support the roof of the new station concourse.

“Visitors who join the tour will have a unique chance to experience the sights and sounds of a live construction site and to meet members of the project team involved in this challenging build.”

Spaces on the hour-long tours are limited and registration is open online at: https://opendoors.construction/site/111.
