Derek Hatton has been suspended from the Labour party just two days after his readmission was confirmed, it has been confirmed.

Hatton, who was deputy leader of Liverpool council in the 1980s and a figure in the party's Militant wing, was controversially readmitted after 34 years, it was revealed on Monday.

But it has now emerged he has been suspended pending an investigation into a tweet he posted in 2012.

The party was reportedly not aware of the tweet when Hatton applied to rejoin but decided to take action after officials found out about it.

While the nature of the tweet was not specified, the Jewish News yesterday reported that, in 2012, Hatton tweeted: “Jewish people with any sense of humanity need to start speaking out publicly against the ruthless murdering being carried out by Israel!”

A Labour Party source said: “Derek Hatton was given provisional membership, pending NEC approval.

"The Party was not aware of this material. Once this was brought to our attention he was suspended pending the NEC’s decision.”
