Works on the former headquarters of Strathclyde Police in Glasgow have begun as the building's transformation into hundreds of flats begins.

Demolition of the Holland Park site was started as the first part of the re-building process which will end with more 433 apartments being erected in its place.

The demolition works are expected to be completed by the end of September, with the new build works on the site to start by the end of this year and construction expected to take approximately two and a half years.

The Pitt Street offices, built in 1934, were previously home to Strathclyde Police, which was the country’s largest force from 1975 until the merger of the eight Scottish Police Forces in 2013.

The site dominated the west of Scotland’s policing operation and even featured in programmes like Taggart.

It is made up of a 1934-built Glasgow and West of Scotland Commercial College and a glass and concrete extension.

The college had vacated the building after merging with the Royal College of Science and Technology to form the University of Strathclyde in 1964.

The other half of the site is the 1984-built post-modern extension.

In 2015, more than 1,000 staff transferred to the new French Street HQ after Police Scotland was formed.

The site was purchased by Moda Living and Apache Capital Partners in October 2016.

Under plans approved by Glasgow City Council in March last year, the police complex on Pitt Street will be redeveloped into flats ranging from studios to three-bedrooms.

Tony Brooks, managing director of Moda Living, said: “With demolition works now underway we are one step closer to redeveloping this fantastic site into high quality rental housing.
