THE workplace parking levy which could be introduced in Glasgow would affect more than 55,000 people who travel around the city everyday for work, according to opponents of the scheme.

Figures from the most recent Scottish census reveal that 55,113 journeys made by car originate from the city.

Glasgow’s city administration committee previously agreed to write to the Scottish Government asking them for permission to introduce the charge.

If plans are implemented in Glasgow, drivers will have to pay  to park at work.

The Glasgow Conservative group has issued a plea to the administration to scrap the idea and told them “their car park tax must go”.

Introduced in Nottingham, the workplace parking levy imposes a £500 a year charge for commuters who drive to work.

It is payable by employers but, in most cases, the cost is passed down to employees.

Glasgow Conservative group leader, councillor David Meikle, said: “This levy is set to be imposed by Glasgow’s SNP run council and thousands of commuters will face having to pay up. That’s just plain wrong.

“Nicola Sturgeon seems to think they should just accept it – it just shows how utterly out of touch she has become.

“Conservative councillors in Glasgow have been the only voice of opposition to this proposal, with Labour voting alongside the SNP in the city chambers to hammer hard working families.

“Scottish Conservatives at Holyrood and in local government will continue to campaign night and day to stop this unfair, unwanted tax on jobs.

“The SNP needs to listen for once – their car park tax must go.”
