WORRIED residents have raised concerns over a partially collapsed block of flats falling into long-term disrepair.

The front of flats on Albert Road, Crosshill, was torn off when Storm Ophelia hit the city in October 2017.

Since then, the site underwent stabilisation works to ensure the building is safe before full repairs get started.

But residents are concerned the property could be allowed to fall into “long term disrepair” as they feel repairs are slowing down.

Local councillor Soryia Siddique, for Southside Central, said: “Constituents have raised concerns regarding the Albert Road storm damaged building.

“The timetable for repairs appears to be slipping and the community is concerned that the building will fall into long term disrepair.

“I have raised building protection and repair concerns with Glasgow City Council development and regeneration services.

“They have advised that officers have now met with contractors and building standards is likely to confirm completion of additional works.

“Public safety is paramount.”

The building had been evacuated prior to the storm after it was found to be unsafe and lay empty for a year.

Emergency services rushed to the scene after the collapse but no one was injured.

An exclusion zone had been set up around the site, with the debris falling inside that. Nearby residents described the collapse as “like a thunder noise”.

In July last year, Glasgow City Council said the flats would be stabilised by November and it was hoped that full repairs would be complete by May this year.

Responsibility for repairing the property lies with the private owners, however the council has offered them financial assistance.

A spokesman confirmed the Council was matching the contribution of the owners to the repairs.

Bailie Siddique said council officers met with the owners’ consultants last month, where it was confirmed contractors would return to the site at the end of February.

These works were to give the building, and the public, added protection until full repairs can be completed.

It is understood the building remains insured and the owners’ agent is pursuing an insurance claim on the owners’ behalf.
