A POLICE probe has been launched after two men were spotted deliberately setting a car on fire after smashing it into a garden.

Around 1.10am this morning, a grey Ford C-Max drove through the gates of the home in Forrest Street, Airdrie.

Two men got out of the car and one through an object at it, setting it alight, before both ran off.

No one was injured but the householder called the fire service who attended and extinguished the fire.

Police are now carrying out forensic tests on the vehicle.

One of the suspect was wearing dark clothing with a dark hood and the other wore a grey puffer jacket with dark hood and grey trousers.

Detective Sergeant Clare Cassidy ay Coatbridge CID said: “Our enquiries so far have led us to believe that this was not a random incident and that the householder was the intended victim.

“We are currently try to establish whether the car was stolen, but due to its burnt out condition, this may take some time.

“Officers are viewing CCTV footage in the area to help identify those responsible and appeal to anyone in the area who may have seen the culprits hanging around the area either before or afterwards to contact police immediately.”

It comes just months after another incident on the street when a blue saloon car was deliberately revered into the gate and wall of a house before being set on fire.
