A BID for fresh funding to transform parts of Glasgow into an active travel hub will be submitted to Sustrans Community Links.

The £115 million Avenues programme, piloted in Sauchiehall Street, will upgrade at least 17 key streets across the city centre over the next six-years until 2025.

Work in this area, which extends pavements and cycle lanes and reduces space for vehicles, is expected to be completed by the end of May.

It was announced yesterday that Scott Street reopened to traffic from Sauchiehall Street.

The Avenues project has been divided into three main sections. But new streets have been identified across the city which could be transformed into a cycle and pedestrian friendly area.

Funding bids are being prepared by Glasgow City Council and will be submitted mid-2019.

The Avenues, which will introduce green infrastructure, extend pedestrian walkways and reduce space for vehicles, have been separated into three blocks – A, B and C.

Block A includes the Sauchiehall Street development but will also oversee the transformation of Argyle Street, Dixson Street and St Enoch’s Centre into a pedestrian and cycle friendly city.

The underline, which will connect the West End to the city centre via St George’s Place, Phoenix Road and New City Road, will promote similar routes.

A contract for block B has been awarded to the council. It will develop active travel routes at the proposed River Park, which seeks to create a world-class area along the banks of the Clyde, developing new public and green spaces, and attract investment funding.

River Park is currently subject of a public consultation as part of the Broomielaw District Regeneration Framework. The other two sites are located in the West End and in the Merchant Quarter. The block C design contract is expected to be awarded in July 2020.

A report on the Avenues Project will be discussed at a council meeting this afternoon. A full report is being prepared for the neighbourhoods policy development committee in June.
