Glaswegians are being urged to dig deep this Red Nose Day to help people in need.

Here in Glasgow, funds raised by the charity go towards helping dozens of organisations, including the Women's Own Project in Glasgow.

The project, delivered by the Citizens Theatre in partnership with Glasgow’s Health & Social Care Partnership, aims to break the cycle of domestic violence, sexual violence, self-harm and addiction by getting vulnerable women involved in the arts.

Lorraine, who had been homeless and had recently undergone life-altering surgery, joined the project after being moved into new accommodation.

Through the classes, that encourage service users to address some of the traumatic experiences in their lives, Lorraine was able to overcome her anxiety about joining the group.

She has since been involved in script-writing, developing songs, making costumes and performing. Surrounded by her new support network, she felt confident enough to put on her prosthetic leg for the first time. Lorraine is continuing to rebuild her life and says the Women’s Own project has helped her to finally believe in herself.

Lorraine said: "The trauma of coming [to the respite accommodation] is terrifying.

You’re homeless, you’re wondering what it’s going to be like, so to have a project like Women’s Own available to you is so important. I couldn’t exist without it. It gives us all the opportunity to be ourselves.

“Before my whole life was a lie but here, I’ve just been able to be me and that’s been the first time I’ve got to be that way for over 20 years. It’s such a release.

“I started coming along when I first moved in and I have noticed such a big difference in myself since."
