A WOMAN who lost her sight while awaiting a kidney and pancreas transplant has vowed to help others battling sight loss.

Elizabeth O’Hara, from Penilee, woke up one morning in 2010 to find her sight had completely vanished.

The 50-year-old, who also has diabetes, was rushed to hospital where doctors discovered she had suffered a “massive bleed” behind her eyes.

Elizabeth told the Evening Times: “I woke up on a Saturday morning and somebody said to me to look out the window because it was snowing really badly. But, I couldn’t. Unfortunately, by the time I got to the hospital, it was too late for the surgeons to do anything.

“They tried to operate but they could only give me some sight back in my right eye.”

The horrific experience robbed Elizabeth of her ability to carrying on as a social worker – a job she felt she needed her sight for – and watching her grandchildren, Cori, 10, and three-month-old Caleb, grow up.

She said: “It was a big change, it took me a while to gain the confidence enough to get back at things. Cori’s grown up with me being visually impaired so she describes everything. She’s very good at it, it’s very natural to her.”

But, when Elizabeth received her lifesaving transplant and “never looked back” thanks to help from the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB).

Now, she’s helping others get their lives back on track and she’s taking on her biggest challenge yet as she vows to complete all four Kiltwalks across Scotland throughout the year to raise funds for an audio-book programme.

The mum-of-two said: “I love reading and I couldn’t imagine not being able to read the same books that everyone else does.

“That’s why I’ve decided to do all four Kiltwalks to raise funds for RNIB this year. RNIB helped me a great deal when I lost my sight.”
