RESIDENTS have been evacuated after a gas explosion in Govan.

The incident took place just after 7am this morning at a block of flats on Kennedar Drive, Elderpark.

Police Scotland has said 23 people have been evacuated as emergency services remain on the scene.

A man and a woman have also been rushed to hospital.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “At around 7.05am this morning, police and emergency services were called to an explosion at a block of flats in Kennedar Drive, Elderpark, Glasgow.

“One man from the flat has been taken by ambulance to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

“A woman from the flat has been taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital. There are no update on any injuries.

“Twenty-three people from the block of flats have been evacuated as a precaution.

“Emergency services remain at the scene as enquiries into the cause of the explosion continue.”

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said it was alerted at 7.04am to reports of an explosion at a block of flats on Kennedar Drive.

A spokesman added: “Operations Control mobilised three fire engines and an aerial appliance to the scene, where two casualties were assisted to safety and passed into the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service.

“A male casualty was transported by ambulance to Glasgow Royal Infirmary, and the female casualty was transported by ambulance to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

“Residents were also evacuated from nearby properties as a precaution.

“Two fire engines remain at the scene, as crews work to make the area safe.”

The flats are owned by GHA. Managing director Jennifer Russell said: “Our staff were on the scene to help residents affected as soon as we were alerted. People were allowed back in shortly after the incident but we’ll continue to support them with anything they need.

“We’re also working closely with the police and fire services.”
