TWO men have appeared in court charged with murdering a man in the block of flats where he lived.

Stephen O'Donnell and Robert Arnold Muir are alleged to have battered 49-year-old George Calvert to death in Paisley on Tuesday.

Prosecutors claim that O'Donnell and Muir, both 29, murdered Mr Calvert in the town's Glen Street.

They appeared in private at Paisley Sheriff Court yesterday to face a single charge of murder.

It is claimed they murdered Mr Calvert by repeatedly punching him and raining blows on his head and body "by unknown means."

Prosecutors also claim that O'Donnell, who lives in the same block where the alleged murder took place, was on bail at the time, having been granted bail at Paisley Sheriff Court on October 31 last year.

Neither man made a plea to the murder charge during their behind-closed-doors hearings.

Sheriff Craig Harris continued the case against both O'Donnell and Muir, also of Paisley, for prosecutors to investigate further and remanded them in custody.

No future court dates have been set but the pair are expected to make a second appearance in connection with the case next week.
