LIBBY McARTHUR is all set for her one-woman show, ‘In for a Penny’ at Webster’s Theatre, as part of The Glasgow International Comedy Festival.

The actor will share her true-life story of being handed a custodial sentence for six weeks for six unpaid parking tickets.

Set in a Scottish Court and its holding cells, Libby conjures up the shoplifters, the sex workers, the lawyers, the social workers, and the parking attendants she met during her harrowing experience of a custodial sentence.

Libby said: “In for a Penny is a play about women being locked up for debt.

“I was a single mum and I was at my wit’s end that my seven-year-old boy would be taken into care.

“As Scotland still has one of the highest rates of imprisonment for women in Europe, I have teamed up with social justice campaigners, Justice Watch, to help raise awareness of the continued plight of women, many with children, are still being handed custodial sentences that could be avoided.

“I will be hosting a Q&A after each show with Justice Watch and will have an array of panel members that have been directly affected or working to change the system.”

Justice Watch was launched in March 2016 after a successful campaign to prevent the building of a super prison for women in Inverclyde.

The purpose was to watch how women were being treated in Scottish Courts in the Criminal Justice system to see why so many women were going to prison.

In for a Penny is at Websters 2, on March 28 to 31 at 8.30pm. Tickets are available from www.glasgowcomedyfestival.com and on the door.
