SCOTLAND suffered a setback in their final game in Marbella when they were edged out by Sweden, but manager Scot Gemmill insisted he could take a huge amount from their last action for six months.

The young Scots won't play against until the Euros qualifiers start in September since they aren't competing in this year's Toulon Tournament. They battled to a goalless draw against Mexico on Friday, but went down a narrow defeat yesterday to the Swedes in the south of Spain.

Despite Barry Maguire levelling for the young Scots in the first half, they crashed to goals from Swansea City striker Joel Asoro and Sunderland starlet Benjamin Mbunga. But Gemmill insisted he will take a lot from the weak in Spain.

He said: "I have to be truthful and say that would not have been the team that would have started our first competitive game. This why we are here because we need to know come September we are 100 per cent certain we have the right squad.

"We have no games until September. It's circumstantial. We haven't got the opportunity to go to Toulon this summer. If it was possible, we would be there.

"I learned that even our best players are still working towards the top level in terms of being able to play against top level opposition. There's no problem with the application, no problem with the tactics, it was just about being able to play against good players and still being able to influence games.

"We conceded two really poor goals - the first one was from a throw-in which we work really hard not to concede goals from and we should have done better with the second one too.

"But that's why we are here, The players need this exposure to top games and while it's disappointing to lose two goals like that, the players can only improve from that."

Sweden took a seventh minute lead after Asoro was afforded too much space in the box and flighted in a header past Rangers keeper Robby McCrorie, who is on loan at Morton.

Scotland drew level on the half hour mark when a free kick from Jordan Holsgrove caused panic in the Swedish box and Barry Maguire, the Motherwell defender on loan at Queen of the South, poked home from close range to equalise.

But the Swedes regained the lead seven minutes before half time when they sliced the Scots open down their right and Sunderland striker Benjamin Mbunga turned in a cutback from Asoro.

Sub Fraser Hornby and Mikey Johnston came close to another equaliser after the break, but Sweden held on.
