THE two horses involved in a collision in East Ayrshire this morning, bringing the A77 to a halt, have died from their injuries.

The driver involved in the crash was left “badly shaken,” but uninjured, Police Scotland has confirmed.

The Evening Times reported earlier how, at around 6am, the A77 northbound had been closed as traffic queued in the area.

The incident affected traffic between B7038 Glasgow Road (Meiklewood Interchange, East Ayrshire) and M77 J8 (Fenwick South, Fenwick).

Congestion had been all the way back to Bellfield Interchange.

The incident was cleared up and the route reopened by around 9am.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “Police were called at around 5.25am on Wednesday to the A77 northbound at junction 8 after a car struck two horses that had got loose from their field.

“The Scottish Ambulance Service attended and checked over the driver of the car who was badly shaken, but not injured.

“Both horses died from their injuries.”

The horses belonged to the Morris Equestrian Centre close to where the incident took place.

The centre expressed its “great sadness” and said in a statement: “It’s with great sadness to let you know that at approximately 5.30am, two of our riding school horses were involved in a RTA on the M77. Both horses were pronounced dead at the scene.

“The driver has not been reported as having any serious injuries but was taken to hospital as a precaution.

“We are still investigating into what has caused the horses to escape. This is a devastating time for all.”
