PLANS to build a fast food restaurant close to a several schools have been slammed by local residents.

As previously reported by the Evening Times, McDonald’s have earmarked Asda Toryglen’s carpark as the location of their latest branch.

If approved, the restaurant would sit at the back of the site on Prospecthill Road and have space for 180 seats.

Local residents and elected officials have objected to the development due to the impact it would have on traffic and children’s health.

Councillor Archie Graham OBE said: “Another outlet selling what many regard as junk food is not a welcome proposal, in my view.”

Local resident Andrew Montgomery said the application lacks a traffic management plan and associated issues. He added: “As a regular shopper at Asda Toryglen I am familiar with the site and the current issues with traffic. Entry to the site does not seem to be an issue. However, leaving the site is frequently a problem with traffic queuing at various points.

“The existing problem will only become worse.”

The new McDonald’s development would result in an overall loss of 106 car parking spaces at the site – down from 615 to 509, 477 for Asda and 30 for the restaurant.

Mount Florida Community Council previously said building the franchise in close proximity to schools was ‘irresponsible’ but have welcomed changes made in the second application.

Six new shops were planned for the site which have since been removed. Chris Carus, chairman of Mount Florida Community Council, said: “The new application is a positive step.

“We were concerned about the amount of rubbish and that they might take businesses away from the Mount Florida shops. Local schools seem to be taking a proactive approach to healthy eating so that is reassuring.”

The plans are due before Glasgow City Council planners.
