DOWNING Street has said the government will never accept a second referendum on Brexit.
In a letter to Glasgow City Council leader, Susan Aitken, a Brexit Minister on behalf of the Prime Minister, Theresa May said there will be no second vote.
Ms Aitken had written to the Prime Minister outlining the concerns of the council earlier this year following a debate and vote in the City Chambers.
Kwasi Kwarteng, under secretary of state for Brexit replied on Theresa May’s behalf.
He said: “We have been very clear that this government will never accept a second referendum.”
He added: “The referendum was the largest democratic exercise this country has ever undergone and to deny its legitimacy or frustrate its result threatens public rust in our democracy.”
The council has raised fears about skills shortages if EU nationals chose to leave the city.
Mr Kwarteng said “We will remain an open and tolerant country continuing to welcome those with the expertise to make our nation better.”
