A WITNESS at the scene of a huge fire in Glasgow’s South Side has told of the moment flames took hold of a tenement block.

We reported earlier how firefighters are at the scene on Skirving Street in Shawlands after the incident just after 8.30am.

The road has since been closed between Deanston Drive and Tantallon Road.

Eyewitness Lachlan Bursle was at the scene and told the Evening Times what he saw.

He said: “It started with smoke at around 8.40am, then fames burst out 8.45am.

“Fire engines were on the scene immediately - four in total. Ambulances came soon after, followed by police. One lady was wrapped in a silver blanket and wheeled to the ambulance. She looked to be hyperventilating, but otherwise okay.

“A dog was brought out and handed to another tenant in the block to look after.

“Firemen have since started clearing some of the damage and fire was out by about 9.10am.

“All this could’ve been worse had someone been pavement parking on the water access.”

“No-one is seriously injured from what I’ve seen. I went down and spoke to some of the residents who were all phoning friends to find places to stay.

“One of them picked up another owner’s dog and is minding it until the owner is located.”

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “We were alerted at 8.33am to reports of a fire within a first floor flat in a four storey block on Skirving Street, Glasgow.

“Operations Control mobilised four fire engines and an aerial appliance to the scene where firefighters assisted two people from the building before handing them into the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service.

“The fire is now extinguished and crews remain in attendance as they work to make the area safe.”

Police Scotland said its officers were alerted to the fire at around 8.40am. Officers rushed to the scene to help with evacuations and to manage traffic in the area.
