The force said two large-scale fights were reported in the North Lanarkshire town at the weekend.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “We were called at around 6.10pm on Sunday, March 31 to a report of a large-scale disturbance within a pub on Mitchell Street, and then a further disturbance on Woodside Street, Kirkwood, Coatbridge.

“Nine people were arrested - seven male and two female - for a number of public order offences following the incident.”

All arrested are either the subject of a report to the Procurator Fiscal or dealt with by fixed penalty notices.

The force was not able to advise if the incident was football related or not.

The decision to close the pub was taken by the premises manager after consultation and with the agreement of the police.

Lanarkshire Licensing Department is currently working with the premises management in providing advice and support.
