MORE staff are to be taken on at a surgical unit that was shut down suddenly leading to the cancellation of more than 1000 operations.

The Cowlairs Decontamination Unit in Springburn closed on November after a “significant” issue with mould and bacteria was identified.

The two-week closure led to hundreds of cancelled ops and some work being farmed out to the private sector.

Work was carried out during the two week closure, including a deep clean, which resulted in the suspension being lifted.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde said it is still investigating the reasons which led to the unit being stripped of its operating license and is to employ more staff in the 'quality department.'

The health board said today that the unit had received a 'positive report' following an unannounced visit by inspectors.

Inspectors are said to have praised the cleanliness of the unit as well as the clear knowledge of staff around cleaning instruments, recording data, training and understanding of responsibilities.

"Also noted was a feeling that quality is taken seriously and is supported by appropriate resources and management commitment."

Tom Steele, director of Facilities and Estates, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, said: “It was clear that we had to make improvements to the CDU after the previous inspection.

“We took immediate steps to ensure we regained our accreditation and have continued to build on that to ensure the service is fit for purpose.

“It is especially pleasing to note the assessment team’s findings on the staff and the recognition of their clear understating of their roles and how well they carry these out.

“Unfortunately, the department had fallen below the standards expected by the health board.

"However, this has clearly been remedied through the dedication of the unit’s staff and colleagues in the facilities and estates departments.

“We’re pleased to receive this positive report; however we’re absolutely determined to ensure we further improve the service we provide. As a result, we’re expanding the staffing in the Quality Department.”

The Board is currently carrying out an investigation into the reasons behind the suspension of the site certificate and any further appropriate corrective actions to be taken."
