SYMBOLS of remembrance have reportedly been stolen from an East End war memorial over the weekend.

The crosses and wreaths were reportedly taken from the Dennistoun War Memorial, which was only erected towards the end of last year.

Those in charge of the memorial believe the items were taken at some point on Friday from the site in Alexandra Park.

Glasgow City Council, who maintain the park, and Milnbank Housing Association, who care for the memorial, do not believe any staff removed the wreaths or crosses from the site.

It is believed the items had remained at the memorial for several months, and have now left the site without any symbols of remembrance.

In a social media post, which has been shared around 60 times, campaigners wrote: "Someone has removed the three wreaths and the Cameronian's remembrance cross.

"The three that sat there were the best of the bunch when I had a clean up a few weeks ago. Also the two crosses were in good condition.

"It looks to me as if this was a malicious act. To say I'm angry is an understatement."

The incident has now been reported to Police Scotland.

Alan Benson, director of Milnbank Housing Association, said: "There is no vandalism on the memorial, the wreaths and crosses have just been taken.

"There is a small fence around the memorial and they were all in behind it.

"At the moment we are trying to find out what happened but nobody at Milnbank Housing Association instructed this. I don't know if there is anything more sinister to it."

A campaign, led by local resident Jim Watson, raised £17,000 to build the war memorial for Dennistoun's war dead.

The memorial itself has only been in place within the park since its unveiling in September, just four weeks after it was attacked with fire.

The 2.5 tonne stone was left with scorch marks, with police discovering a smashed glass bottle, burnt paper and the remnants of a fire at the scene.

Those from the area have condemned the second incident at the site within the first year of its opening.

Glasgow North East MP Paul Sweeney said: "It is disappointing that Dennistoun War Memorial has been targeted for the second time since its unveiling last year, and this latest incidet has come not long after the shameful desecration of a war memorial in Kelvingrove Park.

"The police and all Glaswegians need to come together to protect these important symbols of remembrance all year round.

"We cannot allow an ignorant and malicious minority to ruin these symbols that honour the sacrifice of all who have fallen in conflicts past and present. We will remember them."
