HOMELESS protesters have agreed to leave George Square after they were offered special services to house them.

The group named ‘The Occupiers’ were represented by friend in court Sean Clerkin, 58, who insisted the group be part of the Scottish Government’s Housing First initiative.

This will give the homeless protesters, who have camped in tents since March 25, guaranteed temporary accommodation and complex needs assessments before being given permanent housing.

Mr Clerkin said: “This is a victory for the homeless people of Glasgow as the council will now give complex needs assessments and permanent accommodation.

“They have to be compliant with Housing First and they provide the wraparound services and that is what has to happen with these people - it must be done.”

Through Housing First, 150 tenancies will be offered to people this year and next year and Mr Clerkin calls for The Occupiers to come first in selection.

There are currently nine people occupying a corner of George Square nearest Glasgow City Chambers which houses the City Council.

Council representative Ken McDonald told the court: “They can protest everyday outside the City Chambers as people have done in the past.

“There is no need to camp 24 hours a day to accomplish this protest.”

Mr Clerkin said the tents will be gone from George Square within the next 24 hours.
