THE Argyll Arcade has been evacuated amid reports of smoke filling the building.

Dozens of shoppers and staff were removed from the premises as fire crews investigated.

It had initially been feared fire had broken out at the popular shopping arcade, well known for its range of jewellers.

However, it's understood the incident stemmed from a theft deterrent inside one of the shops.

A spokesman said: “The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was alerted at 11.22am on Thursday, April 11, to reports of smoke within a business premises in Argyll Arcade, Glasgow.

“Three fire engines were mobilised to the scene.”

The centre declined to comment on the incident.

Crews found no sign of fire but have ventilated the property.

Representatives for Barclays Diamonds, where the deterrent is reported to have gone off, have been approached for comment.
