POLICE have placed a section of the M8 on lockdown as they deal with an ongoing incident.

The busy motorway eastbound is closed, with traffic queueing from junction 22 M74 to junction 17 A82 (Great Western Road).

Congestion is all the way back to junction 25 (Cardonald / Clyde Tunnel), a distance of just over five miles.

Train services are also not stopping at Anderston train station.

The incident has been active since around 3pm.

Police Scotland told the Evening Times police received a report at 2.50pm.

A spokeswoman for the force said officers are on the scene close to the Hilton Hotel and that a number of road closures have been put into place.

One motorist who is currently caught in the chaos told the Evening Times: “Police have shut the M8 slip road at the junction of Cook Street and West Street, meaning there’s a considerable tailback for anyone trying to get onto the motorway or into the city centre from the South Side using that route.

“It’s causing a bit of traffic chaos. I hit the traffic at Scotland Street and there’s no warning there’s an incident up ahead.

“Cars and lorries are backing up right down West Street and, when you can’t get onto the motorway, you’re forced to find another way across the river with everyone else, causing gridlock.”
