A TEACHER who almost killed a man in a hit and run has been removed from the teaching register.

Mohammed Yusuf Anwar pleaded guilty to running into a pedestrian on Glassford Street in November 2015.

The 27-year-old was speeding in Glasgow city centre and hit the victim, who was then forced to cling on to the roof of the car as Anwar sped through red lights.

Anwar, a computing teacher, was jailed for 18 months and disqualified from driving for 45 months at Glasgow Sheriff Court on September 7, 2017.

And now his case has come before a panel at a General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS) hearing.

The hearing heard Anwar, who taught for Perth & Kinross Council had contacted the panel by email to say he was remorseful but said "he did not feel he should be punished twice".

Striking Anwar off the register, the panel said: "The panel considered that the conduct was potentially remediable.

"There was, however, no evidence of remediation.

"Given the teacher's apparent lack of insight and the lack of other information from the teacher, there was a risk of recurrence.

"There was insufficient evidence to satisfy the panel that the conduct was in fact remediable, had been remedied and that there was no likelihood of recurrence.

"A finding that the teacher was unfit to teach was necessary given the need to protect the public, and to maintain the public's confidence in the teaching profession and in the GTCS as a regulator."

Anwar will be able to reapply for re-registration in two years.
