NEW designs showing the next stage in the transformation of Glasgow’s waterfront have been revealed.

Plans have been submitted to Glasgow City Council for a private rent residential development, with a roof terrace, and commercial units at Buchanan Wharf.

The application, for ‘Building 5’, is the latest part of a scheme which will see offices, restaurants, pubs and a creche built on the riverside.

Drum Property Group, which is behind the scheme, agreed a deal to fund 324 Build to Rent apartments, in two 18-storey towers, at Buchanan Wharf with Legal & General in January.

A planning report, on behalf of the property company, states: “Building 5 sits at a key intersection of Kingston Street and Commerce Street to the eastern edge of the masterplan site.

“Its location gives it a visual prominence due to the building’s height and will play a key role in Glasgow’s skyline, in particular when entering the city from the south.”

The plans say the site will have “excellent connectivity” to Glasgow City Centre, with well-established cycle routes, pedestrian walkways and vehicular access.

Commercial units, either class one (shops) or class three (food and drink), would have an “active frontage”, allowing them to spill out into the surrounding area.

The applicant states this will “enliven and energise what will be a key route through the wider masterplan”.

A full management system and a 24-hour concierge service would be available within the development, which would include a spacious reception lobby.

The “large open plan” mezzanine level could include private dining spaces, a resident’s lounge, pantry and a gym for residents to enjoy.

“Residents will have access to two communal terraces, each offering enviable views over the city,” the planning report states.”The first terrace is located on the first floor and vistas are orientated towards the River Clyde.

“The second terrace is located on the 16th floor and offers breathtaking panoramic views over to the West End, south and Glasgow Green to the east.”

Based on the south bank of the Clyde, the Buchanan Wharf scheme involves redeveloping three city centre blocks.

Last year, Drum Property Group agreed a multi-million pound deal with Barclays to develop a campus as part of the development. The deal includes 470,000 sq ft of office space and will create around 2,500 jobs.

Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said it would be “transformational” for Glasgow.

The applicants believe the site is ideally located as it faces the International Financial Services District, has direct access to bus, rail, cycle and motorway networks and is 15 minutes from Glasgow International Airport.
