A SOUTH Side community is to undergo a three-week deep clean with roads closed while the clean-up takes place.

Work is set to begin on Tuesday, May 7 with council bosses pledging as little disruption in the community as possible.

But parking and loading on certain roads will be restricted during the work.

The clean-up will include litter picking, street sweeping, weed removal, gully cleaning, and street lighting maintenance.

Notifications will be posted to inform residents of when restrictions will take place in their street.

Local councillor Soryia Siddique welcomed news of the deep clean but cautioned that maintaining the area will need resources committed to Govanhill in the long term.

"I look forward to seeing an improvement in the local living environment.

"However, this also requires a long term commitment of resources and enforcement."

A Glasgow City Council spokeswoman said: "The deep clean is an ideal example of our City Charter to improve the city's cleanliness and a way for the council and residents to work together to achieve this aim and helping to restore civic and community pride."
