YOUNG people will get the chance to vote on how £200,000 should be spent in their community.

An innovative participatory budgeting scheme is asking young people in Greater Pollok to weight up submissions from local groups asking for cash for projects such as a community kitchen or music tuition.

And they will be placing their vote at alive event in Cineworld Silverburn tonight.

The scheme is being carried out by SWAMP, a community development trust, with the funding coming from Glasgow City Council.

Andy Peline from SWAMP said: "This process has been challenging, but we have learned a lot from it and so have the young people.

"I think the biggest thing to come from this process apart from these groups realising their dreams at a local level is that now we have an established core group that have worked hard to make this happen.

"They will now develop The Greater Pollok Youth Forum, bringing in more people and developing a genuine voice that reflects the young people in the area rather than the views of an organisation, to help influence decisions and policies."

Young people from the Youth Television group at SWAMP have made videos showcasing the projects asking for funding.

The applications range from musical instruments and music tuition to sports equipment, developing a recording studio, equipment and support for a community kitchen, funding for youth leaders to support activities in the area and IT equipment for digital editing.

The Greater Pollok Young People’s Participatory Budgeting (PBtv) online process will be hosted on the Young Scot web-site for anyone not going along to Cineworld.

The Young Scot platform will act as a verification process to ensure only one vote is cast per young person.

It is expected to increase the democratic participation of young people in the Greater Pollok Ward as it encourages young people to sign up for their Young Scot national entitlement card and take part in the forthcoming Member of Scottish Youth Parliament (MSYP) elections.

Around 3000 temporary Young Scot numbers have been issued to people under 25 in Pollok to allow them to vote online.

There are 200 young people attending the event in Cineworld who will be issued with voting pads to decide on the 15 projects being presented.

Young people can also watch it live on Pbtv/You Tube and vote via the Young Scot website.

Councillor Jennifer Layden, city convenor for equalities and human rights will be attending the event. She said: "We know that when communities and voluntary sector organisations work together with the council and local elected members there is a much richer outcome.

"Glasgow is pushing the boundaries when it comes to participatory budgeting and engaging local communities to make choices about how money is spent in their local neighbourhoods.

"The council’s model to contract third sector anchor organisations, such as SWAMP Media, to support local residents interested in joining a Citizens’ Panel and lead and shape the process in their area is paying dividends.

"This project is engaging young people in both the democratic process and encouraging them to become involved in economic decision making though different media platforms, making it more interesting and relevant to them."
