HOLLYWOOD megastars Steven Spielberg and Sam Mendes' new project is due to begin work in Govan today.

The pair's new flick, 1917, is to begin filming at the Govan Graving Docks after planning permission was granted last month.

Workers are expected to begin building the set, which should take between eight and 10 weeks, at the site today, with filming due to take place for four days in early June.

It's not yet known how much of an economic boost the filming of the World War One movie will bring to the city.

The docks closed in 1980s and are now owned by New City Vision.

A bid to conver the docks into 700 flats with a heritage centre, retail facilities and a hotel were rejected by the council last year.

The planning proposal, submitted to the City Council in February, said: “It is proposed to construct a set which will be used to form specific sequences for a new feature film based on events during the First World War.

"The area to be used is located on and around the two northern most docks.

"Construction is proposed to the east of the ‘Pump House’ creating a temporary extension to the existing building along with a temporary bridge which will span dock #1.”
