MANY readers paid their tributes online to Celtic legend Billy McNeill. Here’s a selection of comments...

The embodiement of what a true Celt was, all throughout his service to our great club.

I will forever cherish the countless memorable occasions you and your team mates provided us with throughout the golden years.

You led by example and always with DIGNITY, even in defeat.

Who can forget the majesty of him rising above defenders to score memorable goals v Dunfermiline, Rangers, Vojvidina, culminating in leading Celtic to European glory in 1967.

Thanks for the memories ‘big man’ you truly were a giant amongst mere mortals

A MAN who exuded both class and sportsmanship. How I wish some of his attributes would rub off on today’s players. A true icon from Scotland’s greatest ever football era.

JOHN GREIG and Billy McNeill were both great captains for their teams who knew the importance of what representing Rangers of Celtic meant.

They both had such dignity and respect. Both gracious in victory and magnanimous in defeat.

The recent incumbents of these great roles would do well to model what it means to be an Old Firm captain on these two.

Rest in peace Billy, a great player captain and gentleman from this bluenose who had nothing but respect for you and another man of similar stature, Tommy Burns.
