A GLASGOW woman has launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise funds for a first-of-its-kind community cafe in the city.

Mandy Rose Jones, who runs the online blog The Empowered Woman Project, is looking to raise more than £10,000 in the next eight weeks with a view to setting up the city’s first dedicated mental health cafe.

The space would provide opportunities to those out of work and a safe space for everyone else.

The 29-year-old, who is based in the South Side, says that a community approach to mental health is needed, after off-putting experiences when seeking help herself.

She said: "It isno secret that the mental health provision in Scotland can be quite poor.

"I know myself I once visited my GP in crisis and then had to wait six weeks to even receive details of a follow up appointment and that was just this year.

"Not only does this make the individual and their family feel even worse, but we are literally losing lives due to the tick boxes, formal procedures and waiting times and because individuals don’t feel their issues are being taken seriously.

"I see a need for a more community based mental health space."

The idea for the cafe states that the venue would operate on a pay-what-you-feel system, be accessible and would also support people in their day-to-day lives.

Mandy added: "I want to raise enough capital to open a space which is colourful, welcoming, dedicated to those who struggle with their mental health and their families.

"I want to bridge the gap between having no one and needing a doctor.

"I would like to create a space which offers pay as you feel meals and offer volunteering opportunities to those who have found themselves unable to work due to poor mental health."
