A CITY-WIDE £250,000 pilot scheme to test the suitability of secure on-street cycle parking in 50 locations should launch this summer.

Glasgow City Council is in the process of carrying out a feasibility study ahead of the launch, which is expected to be completed by the end of next month.

The council hopes the scheme will encourage people across the city to get on their bikes.

“Glasgow has a significant number of its population living within a four mile radius of the city centre in properties such as Victorian tenements, high rise flats and apartment blocks,” George Gillespie, Executive Director of Neighbourhoods

and Sustainability, said.

“These often have limited cycle storage space and are based around narrow central stairwells.

“This presents problems for storing and moving bicycles and, where cycles are stored in communal space, can cause an obstruction and attract a greater risk of theft.

“These storage issues are barriers to cycling and conflict with the desire of residents to lead more sustainable and active lives.”

The ongoing study will outline recommendations on financing, installing and managing on-street cycle parking infrastructure.

The report to councillors states this will provide a “cost effective, secure and accessible system, which can be implemented across the city”.

Mr Gillespie added: “The output of the study aims to show that the project will encourage an increase in levels of cycling and facilitate convenient, usable and safe cycle storage at ground level.”

“Thus, removing the requirement to lift cycles up several flights of stairs at flatted accommodation and allow the user convenient access to their bike for regular use or safe storage.”

Online consultation on the plans has been completed, with 89 per cent of respondents showing support for the scheme for the introduction of cycle shelters.
