Celtic fans have paid tribute to Stevie Chalmers following his death, aged 83.

Chalmers scored the most famous goal in Celtic history, a goal which secured the European Cup for Celtic, who became the first British club to win the trophy.

It came on the 25th May, 1967 at the Estadio Nacional in Lisbon. With just five minutes of the European Cup final remaining, Chalmers knocked home a Bobby Murdoch shot into the Inter Milan net to give Celtic a 2-1 victory.  

The goal has sparked a football pilgrimage for many Celtic fans, who go to Lisbon to visit the famous stadium and to stand on the spot that Chalmers scored on. 

Stevie Chalmers scored 231 goals in 406 appearances for Celtic between 1959 and ’71, making him the club’s fourth top goalscorer of all-time. Only Henrik Larsson (242), Bobby Lennox (277) and Jimmy McGrory (468) have scored more goals for Celtic.

During his time with Celtic, Chalmers won four league titles, three Scottish Cups, four League Cups and, of course, the European Cup.

The Lisbon Lion passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at the age of 83, a week on from the of Stevie’s team-mate and Lisbon Lion captain, Billy McNeill.
