SCOTT ALLAN believes fellow Scot Lee McGregor will pay the price for believing his own hype when they “go to war” for McGregor’s Commonwealth bantamweight title next month.

The pair will headline the bill at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow on June 22 in a bout set to be televised live on ESPN.

Unbeaten McGregor (5-0-0) will be the strong favourite to retain his title while also claiming Allan’s Celtic belt. But the Shotts fighter believes Edinburgh-based McGregor could come a cropper if he starts to think he can’t be beaten.

He said: “It’s going to be a very exciting fight and Lee is a good operator. But I don’t feel that he’s really been tested. I’ve got everything in my power to exploit him and beat him.

“Lee’s had opponents chosen for him in the past to make his record look good. I just hope he’s not already looking past this fight because if he’s doing that then shame on him.

“If he believes his own hype then he’ll pay the ultimate price. I believed my own hype when I fought Kash Farooq and he dismantled me. I thought I was unstoppable and learned the hard way. So if Lee thinks he’s not beatable then he could be in for a big surprise.

“The Commonwealth title will be an amazing title to hold and it should open so many more doors for me. The British belt is the one I really want and this would give me a great chance of moving closer to that.”

Allan, who will again spar with British champion Farooq, also felt there would be “bad blood” after he pulled out of their scheduled bout last year. McGregor’s camp claimed Allan (9-3-1) had lost his bottle but the Motherwell fan insisted he had never ducked from a fight in his life.

He added: “There’s still a wee bit of bad blood between them and me after the fight got cancelled last year. They only offered me it at four weeks’ notice and I genuinely took unwell leading up to it.

“They thought I pulled out because I was scared. I had never pulled out of a fight in 14 years of competing so that’s when you knew I was properly not well. This time my body and my mind are already in great preparation and I can’t wait to get in the ring. I hope he’s just as prepared as I am and we can go to war.”

Unbeaten McGregor laughed off the idea that he has been too scared to spar with Allan in the past as he relished the prospect of his first fight since switching to the MTK Global camp.

He said: “There’s nothing better than fighting in your home country in front of all the Scottish fans. It’s really dreams coming true type of stuff.

“All of us Scottish fighters want to see each other do well and bring big nights back to Scotland and this is just the start. I can’t wait to get back in the ring. It’s been a long time out but I’ve been training behind the scenes and I’m still learning new things every day so I just can’t wait.

“I know Allan is a strong game opponent. I have never sparred him because apparently I was ‘too scared’! All I can say is that it’s going to be a very interesting fight and I’ll do my talking in the ring on the night.”
