THEY'RE calling it a celebration... but I bet a few people will be calling it an abomination.

You may have tried Buckfast sweets, you may have tried Buckfast brownies - but would you eat a Buckfast pizza?

Fans of the tonic wine will have the chance to do just that at Glasgow's Pizza Punks restaurant where chefs have devised the first ever Buckfast Flavoured Pizza.

It is in honour of World Buckfast Day on Saturday, May 11, and will be available on that day only.

The one-off 12in creation will be topped with a generous helping of beef brisket, which has been infused with the Devonshire wine, creating a rich, sweet flavour.

Along with San Marzano Tomato, Basil & Sauce, Haggis and Tender Stem Broccoli, the celebratory pizza will include three regional variants for each of Pizza Punks’ three locations.

Pizza Punks Glasgow will offer a distinctly Scottish flavour, adding Potato Scone and Pulled Pork infused with the country’s ‘other’ national drink; Irn Bru.

Pizza Punks Newcastle and Belfast will both incorporate Chipotle and Chocolate Pulled Pork, with the Tyneside branch adding Hash Browns, whilst a markedly Northern Irish tinge will be added in Belfast with Potato Bread.

The pizza is not the restaurant’s first conceptualisation using the renowned tonic, with the dish joining long-term customer favourite cocktail ‘By Monks For Punks’ on the menu; a blend of spiced rum, pineapple and lime juices, and Buckfast.
