GANGS of "screaming” teens caused havoc around the lanes near Kelvingrove Park after spending hours drinking in the sun, local residents have said.

Hundreds of 15 and 16-year-old’s spilled out on to Park Terrace and Park Circus at around 7.30pm on Wednesday night, according to locals.

One woman, who did not want to be named, told the Evening Times: “There must have been easily about 200 kids just running up and down that street shouting and screaming, all off their faces."

She added some of the teens separated from the group and ran down one of the lanes to hide when a police riot van arrived and attempted to “arrest” two of the girls.

The resident added: “It took six policemen to get one of these girls into the back of the van. You’d think she was being murdered, the noises she was making."

Police Scotland said they received several calls around 5pm to reports of “a very large number of teenagers” gathering in the park.

They estimated at one point there were 3,500 to 4,000 people - however, they said no arrests were made and no injuries were reported. A quantity of alcohol was also confiscated.

This represents the latest episode of young people causing a public nuisance in the area when they flock to the West End park to enjoy the sunny weather.

During the Easter weekend, four teens were arrested and two were hospitalised following a “brawl” in the park which saw thousands of young people sitting and drinking.

Residents questioned what is being done to combat the anti-social behaviour, including how effectively the Glasgow City Council (GCC) by-law banning the consumption of alcohol in public spaces is being enforced.

“They’re just all off their faces and nobody seems to be doing anything about it,” the resident said.

“Police have been patrolling the park, but I don’t really know what they’re doing.

“There are kind of two policemen walking round the park, and that park is massive - the policemen aren’t going to do anything on their own.”

The resident added they thought searching people as the came into the park and confiscating their alcohol could be a solution.

She added: “I think they’re going to have to reach the point where they shut off the entrances to park and search people going in or something. It needs to be something extreme to stop it happening.”

Police Scotland said they will enforce the GCC by-law, however there is currently no legislation in place which would allow officers to search people specifically for alcohol.

A spokesman for GCC said: “We will be utilising mobile CCTV in the park and there will be a greater presence of community enforcement officers at busy times.”

They added they are working closely with the police regarding the anti-social behaviour in the park, but stressed the enforcement of the no-public-drinking by-law is a matter for the police.
