BOLD plans are being put to Glasgow City Council to bring the banks of the River Clyde to life with homes, a hotel, bars and restaurants.

Bosses are to be given an update next week on the £25 million proposals to completely transform Custom House Quay, which sits on the north bank of the river in the City Centre between Victoria Bridge and Glasgow Bridge.

Custom House Quay is Glasgow City Centre’s main frontage to the Clyde - but it is feared it is not making the contribution it should towards the council’s dream of a more vibrant waterfront.

Concerns about the structural integrity of the quay wall have meant use of the area for big events has been discouraged. A lack of attractions has also meant the area does not benefit from footfall, particularly in the evening.

It is now being proposed City Deal funding of around £25 million be used to fund the project which would drive more people to the area by making it more pedestrian and cycle-friendly.

The proposals come after a previous residential-led plan to develop the site fell through, with changing market conditions and expensive cost of a new quay wall cited as the reasons.

With these new proposals, it is believed a mix of residential, hotel and commercial uses, like bars and restaurants, would make it an attractive destination for Glaswegians and visitors to the city.

The redevelopment of this site could also kick-start other regeneration projects on the Clyde.

Council leader Susan Aitken, described Custom House Quay as “very important,” both in terms of its location on the riverside in the City Centre, close to Buchanan Street and St Enoch Square, and as an attractive development opportunity.

She added: “Glasgow City Region City Deal funding means its redevelopment can now take place.

“Investment in strategic sites on the Clyde is currently taking place at Glasgow Harbour and at Tradeston with the Barclays campus, and the development of Custom House Quay would be another step towards realising the full potential of the waterfront.”

A design for the proposal and a formal application to the council is expected to be made.

If given the green light, construction would begin in Spring 2022, with completion in Spring 2024.
