AN eyewitness said they heard a huge bang before screams as a Glasgow police officer was struck by a car in the East End on Friday morning.

The collision took place at around 10.50am on London Road between Carmyle Avenue and Westhorn Drive.

The constable had been responding to a separate report of a broken down vehicle when he was struck by a Vauxhall Corsa.

The officer was taken by ambulance to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital for treatment.

He is understood to have sustained serious leg injuries.

An eye witness told the Evening Times: “We heard one bang, turned around and saw the Land Rover and the police car stopped.

“And then minutes later there was another loud bang, really loud, it must have been bad.

“We heard someone scream too, like a woman screaming.

“We saw the Corsa facing this way into the road so it must have hit the police car or something.

“We could see the guy lying on the ground and so many people around him.

“Loads of police cars were here within minutes and people from the Arnold Clark came out too.

“Two ambulances turned up and we could see they were working on him for a while before taking him away.

“The bang was so loud, he must have taken a right big hit.”
