GLASGOW’S historic Mackintosh at the Willow is set to open a revamped roof terrace for customers.

The tea room is also offering a Scottish-inspired afternoon tea in honour of Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s birthday this weekend.

The roof terrace, which is the final part of the building to open for public use, is one of two only south-facing terraces in the city.

With exposed brick work, the area has views of the historical Mackintosh Building and chimney which can be seen from a height for the first time since its opening in 1903.

Guests visiting the roof terrace over the summer can enjoy a new bespoke drinks menu.

As if that wasn’t enough, the revamp includes a new Instagram-friendly spot featuring ivy foliage and floral detailing on the exposed brickwork, as well as designer furniture from.

On June 8 and 9 only, the three-tiered afternoon tea will be served on exclusive willow patterned burleigh, and includes finger sandwiches, traditional fruit and plain scones and handmade artisan cakes and treats.

Caitlin Divers, events and operations manager, described how the staff is “thrilled” to unveil the refurbished roof terrace to the public just in time for the summer.

She added: “Mackintosh at the Willow is an important building and we’ve taken great pride to preserve its history and enhance this hidden gem in Glasgow.

“We have no doubt this spot will become a staple for those looking to catch some rays and are thankful to our trustees, as well as our team, for helping us achieve our vision.”

Mackintosh at the Willow is a 200-cover restaurant in the A listed, internationally recognised, original Willow Tea Rooms building at 217 Sauchiehall Street.

The famous tea rooms first opened in 1903 and are of huge importance to Glasgow’s architectural and cultural heritage. They are the only surviving tea rooms designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh for local entrepreneur and patron Miss Kate Cranston.

The Scottish afternoon tea is available June 8 and 9. The roof terrace opens on June 8. Guests are unable to book in advance for the roof terrace, but can to pop along between noon and 5pm. Private hire is also available. Visit mackintoshatthewillow.com
