A Mastermind contestant who made it through to the quiz show's final appeared on TV hours after his funeral.

Retired IT manager Hamish Cameron, 72, was ill when the programme was recorded in November and died last week after being diagnosed with cancer.

Mr Cameron told his family he wanted his Mastermind appearance to be broadcast, even if he was no longer here to see it.

He finished fourth in 2019's final, which was broadcast on Friday.

Mr Cameron's son, Niall, told the Press & Journal: "Hamish wouldn't want us to be sad, but to find the positives.

"It's quite strange timing but, knowing Hamish, he would see the irony in it."

Mr Cameron, from Elgin, Scotland, was a keen quizzer and first appeared on Mastermind in 1990 when it was hosted by Magnus Magnusson.

He has since gone on to feature on Mastermind more than any other contestant, with 17 appearances.

This year's final was the second he had taken part in, after also making it through in 2014.

The BBC said it considered postponing Friday broadcast out of respect to Mr Cameron, however his family said he wanted to make sure the show went out.

According to the BBC, Mr Cameron's wife, Edna, children Mairi, Niall and Isla were joined by other family members at his home to watch the final after his funeral.

Mr Cameron's specialist subject for Friday's show was the American painter Mary Cassatt. Mastermind is hosted by John Humphrys.
