A TALENTED troupe of young performers will take centre stage at the Evening Times Streets Ahead Awards tomorrow night.

The delightful dozen, who are all students of Angela McCallum’s School of Music, will be strutting their stuff to a medley of Queen hits, in true We Will Rock You style.

“There’s even an air guitarist,” smiles Angela. “Ava Smith, who is eight years old, is the youngest member of the team, and she is a rock and roll diva….”

The group also includes Talia Webb, who at 17 is the oldest performer, and Lennon Wylie, the young singer who recently made it to the grand final of prestigious musical theatre competition West End Calling.

“They are all looking forward to performing in the City Chambers,” explains Angela. “It’s a chance for them to get some real-life experience, showcasing their talents to an audience which doesn’t just include mums and dads and grandparents.

“It’s a gorgeous venue, and they are all excited about having the chance to take part in such a lovely event. It’s an opportunity for them to give something back too.”

The Streets Ahead Awards marks the end of another successful year of our awardwinning community campaign, which brings neighbours together to improve the city for all.

The Evening Times and its partners, Glasgow City Council, City Building and City Charitable Trust will be presenting award trophies at the City Chambers.

The three finalists in the Best Garden category are Erica Quinn, Charles Rogerson and Gordon Kendall.

Battling it out for the title of Best Clean Up Campaign are Scottish Youth Forum, Friends of Househill Park, Calton Green Volunteers and FROGGS (Friends of Garnethill Green Spaces)

The contenders in the Glasgow City Council Environmental Initiative category are TCV’s Mid-Week Group Volunteers, Impact Arts Creative Pathways, Friends of Linn Park and Urban Roots (Malls Mire Conservation Group).

The finalists for Best Community Garden, one of this year’s most hotly contested categories, are Pacitti Garden, G3 Growers, Help Yourself Grow Glasgow and Woodlands Community Development Trust.

Locavore, Bike for Good and Glasgow Wood Recycling are competing for the Glasgow City Council Green Business Award, while the four groups who made it on to the short list of Best Community Initiative, in the face of stiff competition, are Pollokshaws Community Hub, Friends of Linn Park - in their second nomination of the evening - The Cabin and Men Matter Scotland.

St Denis Primary, King’s Park Secondary, Burnbrae Children’s Centre and Jimmy Dunnachie Learning Centre are all hoping to be crowned Best School.

As well as the category awards, judges - who include representatives from all of our partners - will present a special trophy on the night to the overall winner.

Evening Times deputy editor Henry Ainslie, who was chairman of the judging panel, said: “Our Streets Ahead Awards night is always an exciting and uplifting event.

“It gives us and our generous partners- City Charitable Trust, City Building and Glasgow City Council - an opportunity to pay tribute to the fantastic men, women and children who make our city greener and cleaner in a host of imaginative ways. Tomorrow night is shaping up to our best end-of-year celebration yet.”
