GLASGOW shoppers are more likely to have parcels stolen from outside their homes than in any other city in the UK.

New research reveals more than half of city residents - some 53 per cent - have had a delivery stolen from outside their front door.

Residents are also making the error of putting packaging for expensive items next to their bins - causing a temptation for local burglars.

Across the UK, the average value of the stolen goods taken was £41.43, which equates to a total estimated value of more than £1.1billion.

Under a quarter of the snatched packages in Glasgow were valued at more than £100, and about a quarter cost between £50 and £100.

After Glasgow, Edinburgh had the highest percentage of victims at 51 per cent, followed by Birmingham at 49 per cent, Manchester at 48 per cent and Bristol at 42 per cent.

Sheffield was the safest place for parcel delivery with only 28 per cent of buyers having their packages stolen.

More than one third of Glasgow residents are inadvertently advertising recent purchases to local burglars by leaving product packaging on display outside their home or next to their bin, and the research suggests that women were more likely to do so than men.

The age group 25 to 34 year olds have had the most parcels stolen from outside their front doors and were the least likely to conceal the packaging in the bins.

Anthony Neary, MD of safe.co.uk said: "It’s worrying that over half of people in Glasgow have experienced parcels being stolen, in a world where online shopping is part of everyday life.

"We want to warn people in Glasgow to hide their gift packaging as it is a huge concern that over a quarter of us display packaging next to our bins.

"If burglars see packaging outside your home for an expensive item, such as a state-of-the-art TV or games console, they are much more likely to target you over your neighbours, so we strongly recommend hiding all packaging where possible.

"Additionally, we can’t stress the importance of installing home security measures to deter criminals in your area enough."
